Thoughts from the Pastor

I recently discovered "ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5TH GRADER?" on television. Sometimes, it's a real challenge to answer the questions put to the contestants. It got me thinking...I sometimes ask questions during the children's meditation. Sometimes I look out and get a lot of blank stares. So, I'm going to share some of the questions that the confirmation class will have to answer before they are confirmed. See how well you do.

1. How many "Synoptic Gospels" are there in the New Testament?
     (A) one (B) two (C) three (D) four

2. How many gospels contain the story of Jesus' birth?
     (A) one (B) two (C) three (D) four

3. How many books in the Old Testament?
     (A) 25 (B) 27 (C) 35 (D) 39

4. How many books in the New Testament?
     (A) 25 (B) 27 (C) 35 (D) 39

5. How many stories of creation are contained in the book of Genesis?
     (A) one (B) two (C) three (D) four

Besides, questions like these, the students are asked to finish assignments such as asking persons (Family, friends, relative, etc.) the following questions:

1. Why are you a Christian?

2. What difference does it make to you?

Now if you were confronted with having to answer these questions, what would be your response?

The most recent question the class was to deal with was one where I asked them to write a one page essay on what the words "GOD IS LOVE" meant to them. I reminded them that we have the words carved in wood on the balcony, but what does it mean to them in their hearts? Again, what would be your response?

Now for the answers:

1. There are (C) three Synoptic Gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke.

2. (B) Two of the gospels contain the story of Jesus' birth; Matthew and Luke.

3. There are (D) 39 books in the Old Testament.

4. There are (B) 27 books in the New Testament.

5. There are (B) 2 stories of creation in the book of Genesis.
